Great Masquerade As King
Otto Witte
Otto Witte was a German con artist and adventurer who lived from 1872 to 1958. He gained notoriety for his audacious and imaginative scams, which included impersonating high-profile personalities and successfully fooling the public and authorities. One of Witte's most famous hoaxes occurred in 1905, when he posed as the newly-crowned King of Albania, claiming the throne and even managing to meet some European heads of state. His deception lasted for several months before he was exposed and arrested. Witte's audacity didn't stop there. He later pretended to be a German officer during World War I, allowing him access to luxury hotels, fine dining, and other privileges typically reserved for military personnel. Additionally, he claimed to be a member of the British Royal Air Force and even flew an airplane over Berlin in 1914, despite having no pilot training.
